Nourishing Traditions: The Cookbook that
Challenges Politically Correct Nutrition and the Diet
Dictocrats, by Sally Fallon
In 1999, I had written my own
cookbook and ended up putting it aside after I found
Sallys cookbook in 2002. When I first read through her
book, I had difficulty accepting her ideas surrounding
saturated fat, animal protein, soy and dairy products,
but after I heard her presentation I was sold. Her book
brings back the wisdom we need to truly understand the
fundamentals of a healthy diet. Im of Irish decent;
therefore, I should respect my lineage and eat
accordingly. In other words, I have removed the diet
fad albatross off of my shoulders and have been able to
enthusiastically return to a meat and potato diet.
This is an oversimplification, but it is what I needed
to understand so that I could follow a common sense
eating plan.
I have studied and tried many
different diets in order to regain my health, and have
yet to find any other book or diet that makes as much
sense as what Sally recommends in her very comprehensive
cookbook, Nourishing Traditions. In order
for me to appreciate Sallys cookbook, I had to
experience the adverse side effects of following a vegan
diet. Initially, I tried a vegan/macrobiotic diet, which
proved to be a disaster. Then, for about 10 years, I
followed a vegan/raw food diet, which further
compromised my health. Over the last 20 years, I have
met many individuals who have also suffered adverse side
effects from following these vegan diets. It is because
of Sallys work and my own observations, that I am even
more convinced of the health benefits of following
traditional diets.
As I was a vegan for many years, I
fully understand the industry propaganda being used to
convert people to diets based on vegetable protein,
specifically soy. For many years, I believed the lies
being put out about processed soy. I can now see that
the push to convert us to a soy-based diet is being done
to increase corporate profits rather than to improve our
health. As I examine my Irish lineage, I now realize
that it made no sense for me to have eaten processed soy
(I also had no idea of the dangerous side effects
related to eating this food).
As I have enthusiastically
re-integrated animal protein and saturated fat back in
my diet, I have also learned of the differences between
factory-raised animals and pastured (grass-fed) animals.
These sources of meat, chicken, eggs, dairy etc
are
superior in nutrition to factory raised animals. Thanks
to Sallys Real Milk campaign, I have also overcome my
fear of dairy products and now enjoy the benefits of raw
milk, butter, cream, cheese, yogurt and kefir.
Nourishing Traditions
is not just a cookbook that challenges the diet
dictocrats; it is a way of life that offers hope to
those who are sick and confused about what to do to get
healthy.
